Central California Scuba, January-June, 2012: 2 of 5
Diving in the kelp beds of Central California can be one of the most rewarding of activities. This video has some white seabass, garibaldi, lingcod (including a 24 pounder), senoritas, rockfish, cabezon, perch, and leopard sharks.
I compiled some of my diving videos from the last 6 months. This was all shot between Point Conception and Pt Estero. All clips are from January through June 2012. After editing it down, I decided to split it up into 5 parts. This is part 2.
I hope you enjoy it.

Yeah a taller guy …
Yeah a taller guy about 30. He took me out a few times, but he was way more advanced than me so i couldn’t keep up. Yes, once i get back into town i’ll be sure to hit the waters asap!

I have met Kale (can’t be too many Kales diving around here), and he is a pretty solid guy. I have not been diving with him, but his ability oozes out of him. Good luck with the cert, and I hope to see you out on the water.

I bought my first …
I bought my first set of fins, a weight belt, mask, and snorkel from Chuck back in 2008. He was a good guy. I have a friend Kale who got me into it and took me to Chuck’s shop. I would like to be Scuba certified either way, because it would be nice to just explore too you know?

…closed on days …
…closed on days he is supposed to be open, for dive operations. Then to make up for it he will be open on his closed days (he is typically closed Wed-Thurs).
SLO Ocean Currents is the other dive shop and they are to be found on South Higuera Street near the DMV. Anthony, the owner, is an avid sport diver, spearfisherman, and lobster hunter so that is his background for comparison (as I have seen it). He does work his shop, but he has regular employees so he is always there on his posted hours.

Don’t get too …
Don’t get too discouraged with freediving, it is fun in its own right. Having the scuba option is nice though, since some areas are better suited for it.
There are 2 dive shops in San Luis Obispo, and both are good. I would recommend poking your nose into both, and comparing prices and service.
Depth Perceptions, on Los Osos Valley Road is very good. Chuck, the owner, does commercial diving (lifting of ships, pipe inspection, etc) so that is a lot of his background. He very often will be…

I tried free diving …
I tried free diving a few times, but was discouraged because i didn’t have the stamina of holding my breath that long. I have always been interested in getting my scuba cert. One of the few times i went i went past cambria around big sur. It was a gorgeous area. I would like to move back to SLO in the next year, but we’ll see if i can find a job. Any recommendations for getting my cert in the SLO area?

Most of these leopards are 4-5 feet, possibly bigger. I would not worry about leopard sharks, they are pretty skittish. Typically I have a very difficult time even getting near them, much less having them show aggression.

What was the largest Leopard Shark you saw there? Any that you would be worried about, or ever hear about ones big enough to be worried about in that area?
